About this work
This painting speaks not only of nature but of a symbolic kinship. The white silkworm, spinning its cocoon from the finest of threads, seems to be echoed in the artist’s own surname — Shelkovenko (from “shelk”, the Russian word for silk).
The work is devoted to the silkworm — a fragile creature entrusted by nature with making the thread that becomes natural silk. Its cocoon is both the result of painstaking work and a natural form in its own right, resembling a work of art.
The painting was made while the artist was moving from Estonia to Portugal. For that reason the silkworm here stands not only for creation but for the passage from one state to another, for inner transformation and the start of a new chapter.
In every movement of the brush there is the sense of a thread; in every stroke, attention to a small maker in nature whose name is symbolically echoed in the artist’s own.

2023
Eight works painted over the years of emigration — from Russia to Estonia, and then to Portugal (2022–2026). Recurring images of birds, nests and a cocoon, warm light on deep blue, and fine unbroken threads. The shared thought: home is not walls or borders, but what you carry inside.
